Welcome lift by John to The New Inn Hotel Public House at Clifford Chambeers. Parked in car park with other cars of NHS Group walkers. Short gathering in silence to respect the loss of a fellow group walker, then started walk along main street towards Moated Manor House, passing the Church of St Helen. Sharp right turn at Moated Manor House, then almost straight ahead to Cold Comfort Farm via wooded hill top. Left at farm across fields towards Jubilee Cottages and Atherstone Hill Farm, with misty views across River Stour Valley. Quiet country lane into Preston on Stour village, passing hand water pump in Lodge Cottage garden and listing timbered cottage. Short walk on to church and a welcome refreshment break on a bench against the church boundary wall. Start of loop from church towards Wimpstone, via the River Stour and Preston Lane, back to to church. Unharvested corn on the cob growing in field before Preston Lane, opposite Highland Cattle and a glimse of deer in Alscot Park from Preston Lane. Crossed the River Stour by weir just before Preston on Stour, through village to path high above river with good views of Alscot Park and House in distance. Wild strawberries growing alongside path, very unusual in November. Into Atherstone on Stour village, passing St Mary's Church, a sheep dog working a herd of sheep, and the friut warehouse, scene of a large fire a few years ago. Straight footpath to Clifford Chambers and the end of walk at The New Inn Hotel, passing a 1964 Rover 216 SLi car in good condition. We all enjoyed a welcome Carvery and drink (pint) in hotel, thanks to Shiela who organised the walk and the meal.
