We started from the car park off South Street, turned into High Street, passing market buildings and town hall to an alley for St Michael's Church. We made a short visit to the church to find the organist practising completely on her own. I recalled that on the first time I completed this walk, almost five years before (see Walk 601) a lady organist was also practising on the organ with no-one else in the church - I wondered if it was the same lady? We continued along School Lane with a slight detour to the Dartington Crystal factory shop. Taking extra care down School Lane we walked facing the traffic as there was no footpath. We found a path after remembering the ponderings of last time. There were several paths leading off the path, but we kept generally in the same direction. We spotted a large number of long straight sticks in a small cluster on top of the ridge towards Torrington. After much debate we decided that the sticks must be an art sculpture as no other suggestions fitted the situation. At the concrete footbridge after '4' we saw a girl jogging with a dog, which swam under the low bridge chasing sticks. We continued up the zig-zags to the main road and enjoyed a welcome pint in the Puffing Billy alongside the Tarka Trail. Larry enjoyed watching the two caged parrots by the bar. Refreshed, we continued along the path and soon found a bench for another stop, this time for food.
