Sylvia was reading a book in the car which was parked in School Lane long stay car park, 40p per hour. It was a varied and hilly walk right round the town. I recommend car parks near the castle wall. There were plenty of seats and good views across Torridge Valley. It was windy on the hill tops. I took care down School Lane as there was no footpath. After School Lane the footpath was good right round the town to Mill Street, each path named using an engraved stone on the ground. I wondered how long the stones would remain untouched? The youths rule society today. Mill Street was very picturesque in the sunshine, especially Torridge Inn and the adjacent thatched house at the bottom of the hill. I was careful crossing Taddiport Bridge as there was no protection from cars. There were warning notices on the inside walls of the chapel in Taddiport, and also the Toll House on the corner of the bridge. Ignore the fork to the left just before '12'. I spotted a green woodpecker at the obelisk. There were excellent views across the valley from the obelisk and castle wall and some interesting buildings in the tower. You need eyes in the back of your head to dodge the traffic and admire the architecture. I put my head round the door of St Michael's Church to find that only the organist was inside, playing away to herself. I found interest around every corner.
.
Hazards:
Face on-coming vehicles when walking down School Lane and across Taddiport Bridge.
