Walk No 60 first walked on 25th August 1982. Parked in Shawford by Down Sign in car park near railway station. It took a while to find the car park because the M3 motorway had been built since my last visit. I was confused with the 'AA' map because the railway is shown on the map but not designated, so I thought the railway was the 'A3' main road. Walked from the car park under the railway bridge, past 'The Bridge' public house and over the Shawford Bridge. Turned immediately left from the bridge onto the Narrow towpath of the Itchen Navigation. A beautiful fast flowing & shallow river, surrounded by a multitude of flora & fauna. Turned off the towpath just before the M3 motorway, along an overgrown and disused canal to the road 'B3335' and the entrance to the Twyford Hockey and Golf Club. We followed the footpath signs around the back of the car park , up Twyford Down and through the coppice to the summit & green No 5 at point '7'. We scaled the stile at point '8' and turned right along a track gaining height slowly before a steady descent along the narrow and double hedged green lane, returning to the 'B3335', just before Twyford. Blackberry pickers in lane were collecting blackberries from the high hedges over 2.5 metres high. The highest growing blackberries I have seen. We followed the main road into Twyford Village passing Twyford House and onto Twyford School. Ken & Laz walked past the school, having to be called by phone and asked to return to Old Rectory Lane to visit St Mary's Church. Walked around to the church entrance and entered the holy place with interest. A busy church with eight bells. From the church we walked down the lane to the meadow. Instead of continuing south/west across the meadow to the lane by Shawford House, we walked north/west to Water Meads Meadow and the Sluice Gate at point '3' on the River Itchen Navigation. We returned to the car park as per the outward walk, passing the Shawford Bridge, 'The Bridge' public house, the railway station and the many small planes descending into Southampton Airport.. Location: www.streetmap.co.uk , --- Start & finish from Shawford 447145/124985 , - via Twyford Down Golf Course 448705/126570, - and via Twyford School 448335/124915. (Click on location and use Zoom). Hazards: Keep to the footpath when walking along the busy 'B3335' into Twyford. The towpath and the meadow could well be muddy after wet weather. Beware of flying golf balls alongside the golf course. Don't be tempted to move any of the balls into the rough. Golfers tend to have strong arms and fists.
