Lots of noise and flashing lights from Police and Ambulance vehicles driving through Weston as we approached the village. Passed an attractive bungalow at Inglenook as we entered the fields towards Weston & Waverley Woods. Discussed the possibility of a serious accident with a local dog walker as the emergency air ambulance helicopter hovered overheard near the Fosse Way. Crossed Weston Lane near Weston Fields Farm by the rubbish dump site at the old sand pits. Walked along the dump boundary to an impressive new finger post at the intersection of public footpaths. Soon passed a high seat in the hedgerow, with an inbuilt wooden ladder, on our way to Wappenbury Wood, probably installed to help 'The Shoot' to cull the local pheasants and/or pigeons. Brief shower and a rainbow over Bubbenhall Wood as we entered Wappenbury Wood and followed the path eastwards towards Nunswood Farm. At the exit to the wood we passed an information board, describing the wood's beauty and the local wildlife, also passed a huge unique double kissing gate. Couldn't decide the exact purpose of the double kissing gate, possibly to help large groups with children and dogs. Soon passed through another new conventional gate as we entered a field heading towards Hill Farm. Crossed the Princethorpe Road (B4453) & by Hill Farm on our way to Wappenbury Village. We were amazed how wet the fields were, despite the steep slope on the field down to the river. Sat on a new bench, in memory of Bill & Brian Maskell, near the entrance to Wappenbury Hall, to enjoy our lunch. Continued through the village and walked down to the bridge over the swollen River Leam. Walked on to Hunningham, passing Bridge House , Red Lion Pub and the narrow Hunningham Bridge , again over the River Leam, as we walked to Weston under Wetherley, South Cubbington Wood and Pinehurst. Another enjoyable walk with John through the Warwickshire Countryside. Location: www.streetmap.co.uk , - Start & Finish: Cubbington 434360/268445, - via: Wappenbury Wood 437630/27080, - via Weston under Wetherley 436045/269200. (Click on location and use Zoom). Hazards: Gaters recommended during or after a wet period, especially when the ground is saturated with water. After the walk it is far easier to clean gaters instead of heavily soiled trousers.
