General:
Started walk from car park to east of Grasmere Village. Crossed main road (A591) with great care, to Town End and Wordsworth's, Dove Cottage. Steady ascent past Coffin Bearers Resting Stone, to pond and turning to left up steep tarmac road. Shortly after pond we turned left again to signposted track to Alcock Tarn. Good winding path with convenient benches at view points. Best view point on Grey Crag where the mountains unfold as far as the Langdale Pikes and Crinkle Crags. Clouds down to Bowfell and Crinkle Crags, Scarfell only a memory. Clear views across River Rothay to Silver How, Grasmere Common, Helm Crag and Steel Fell. Steady and steep walk up to Alcock Tarn on a small plateau below Heron Pike. Lots of small tiddlers in the tarn came to the surface when bread was tossed into the tarn. Continued from tarn down below Butter Crag to intersection of paths, down to Greenhead Gill and up the valley below Heron Pike and Great Rigg. Martyn, Charlie, Will, Kev & Tony continued their walk up the valley while, myself, Bob & Colin continued down and back to the car park. We were expecting Martyn to ascend on a path to Heron Pike, so we were surprised when they continued past the turning, upwards towards Great Rigg. Our path descended steeply towards the wood and Greenhead Gill. We followed a stone wall and crossed the gill using the natural stepping stones in the water. As we continued down the valley we discovered a bridge over the gill, by a gate, which could be used in flood conditions. Very attractive and expensive houses either side of lane down to minor road, leading to main road (A591). Not sure of correct path across the fields to car park, so we walked into Grasmere passing all the tourist shops and Wordsworth final resting place. Thanks to Martyn for organising the walk at short notice.

Hazards: Always take extra care while crossing main roads. Not easy to respond to an unexpected incident when fully equipped with walking equipment and walking boots. Take extra bread to feed the fish.
