Description:
I parked in Broad Street and talked to the local vicar while we were putting our boots on. He recommended a detour to the monument at the top of Town Hill and said it was the best view in Montgomeryshire. It was a steep ascent from the car, passing the Town Hall, via toilets, hotel, old water well and the old prison or gaol, the first in Montgomeryshire. We continued on the lane, disturbing a heron, to a stile at '3'.  We climbed over the stile at the entrance to the Hillfort. We crossed the fort on the crest of the hill to a steep descent on a good track. After a wood from '5', we crossed a field of black Welsh sheep to B4385, taking care to use the footpath past the huge rock which supported the castle, to reach the War Memorial Gardens at the end of Arthur Street. We saw a huge lorry carrying turf driving up the lane from the gardens, the wrong way up a one-way street! We did not take a sharp right but turned right along Castle Walk before the 'white house' and the old water pump. This was a relatively recent development which was now misleading the correct route. We continued to the next white house, just past the ironmongers of the left 'Bunner'. The path turned sharp right through a kissing gate. Ken bought me a new rubber end (ferrule) for my walking stick from 'Bunners'. We continued up the well-defined narrow track to the castle, which was currently having restoration works, with scaffolding erected in several places. After walking round the castle we entered along the bridge and enjoyed a very pleasant lunch in the warm sunshine. From the castle the way was half blocked by the builder's fence so we walked around the fence and down the lane to be stopped by a lady at the farm gate on a quad bike. She explained that the lane was not a footpath and the correct route was the other side of the farm house. We showed her the map and the AA page and she said she's seen the maps many times but we were not to pass through. We returned to the castle and took the alternative route to the car park at '9'. With plenty of time we took the vicar's advice and added the short journey through the kissing gate at '9' to the War Memorial monument and OS column on top of Town Hill. There were excellent views all around, even to Cadair Idris and Stiperstones. The views were helped by topograph. We descended to '9' and returned to the car via a pleasant and recommended visit to the Old Bell Museum. I was able to take good photos of Great Western Manor steam trains. Later, we enjoyed a pint in the Market Square, Warwick. .
