Description:
Sylvia was reading a book in the car, in the car park. It was a steady ascent from the car park to the ramparts. I walked on the largest, or inner rampart from west to east gate, instead of the outer rampart. It was difficult to know which rampart is which at the gates because of the path into the castle centre, which meanders between several smaller ramparts. It was easy walking on top of the rampart but steep sides on both flanks. There were good steps and stile to the north of east gate. I visited the temple site and returned to the ramparts and eventually the steep path down from '4' to '5'. It was a quiet single track road from '5' to '6' and a steady ascent in a grassy valley from the road to west gate. A fingerpost at west gate showed one mile to Monkeys Jump. From west gate to the car park was a steady descent. I was disappointed not to find a good photo position to show the detail and the large number of propositions of ramparts. The ideal position for a good photo would obviously be from the air.

Mapperton

Hazards:
Take great care when traversing the rampart tops, because of the steepness of the slopes. Do not observe the views or trade photos while on the move. It only takes one wrong footstep.
