'AA' No Through Road, 184th walk & 809.5 miles. Parked in 'White Moss Common' National Trust Car Park and displayed Members Car Park Season Ticket. Crossed footbridge over River Rothay and walked through wood alongside river bank to the weir at the outflow from Lake Grasmere. Very pleasant walk along shoreline of lake in sunshine taking numerous photos of surrounding mountains. The visibility was so good we just wished we were on a ridge somewhere, enjoying the views. I felt very sorry for one family with children, a swan was giving them lots of hassle as they were trying to have a picnic. A little further along the shore we came across a bolder in the water that was tantalisingly close but required a huge leap. I was tempted and through myself into the air and landed on the rock. My momentum almost toppled me into the water but somehow I stuck to the rock, only just. The return leap was almost as bad because the push off the rock made it move, but fortunately only a little. The footpath eventually took us away from the shoreline and onto the minor road around the lake. The road was very busy with cars, sightseers enjoying the scenery but too lazy to walk. We passed a stone wall by 'The Wyke' that was in the trees and completely covered with moss. Not today, but obviously normally very wet. We walked into Grasmere and joined the typical shoppers & holiday makers. We visited William Worksworth's grave, the Ginger Bread Shop numerous walking shops, Harwoood's Hotel and enjoyed a welcome pint in the Lamb Inn. From Grasmere we again enjoyed the mountain views to Town End and Dove Cottage. Climbing up the lane from Town End we all had a rest and sat on 'The Coffin Stone', a resting stone to lay the coffin in bygone days during the journey to the funeral service and grave yard. We continued up to How Top and down a very rough track back to the car park. www.streepmap.co.uk, start/finish White Moss Common Car Park 334880/506520, via Grasmere 333710/507365. Hazards: Do not jump onto rocks in water, they may be very slippery from unseen algae. Always walk on the right facing oncoming traffic on roads, especially narrow lanes (in the Lake District). | |||||
