Points of Interest: Triscombe Wills Neck Bagborough Hill Triscombe Stone Quantock Combe Seven Wells Wood Robin Upright's Hill Great Bear Dead Woman's Ditch Black Hill Lady's Edge Severn Estuary Bicknoller Post Beacon Hill Minehead Smith's Combe Alfoxton Park Hotel Holford Bagborough Hill : 1260 feet (384 metres) Beacon Hill : 1017 feet (310 metres)General: Started from Triscombe House entrance with a short road (lane) walk into Triscombe. Difficult to find footpath entry up Bagborough Hill at first. Finger post just south of lane 'T' junction. Steep climb directly to top of Wills Neck on summit of Bagborough Hill. Short descent to Triscombe Stone and lane towards Crowcombe Park Gate. After a little searching we found footpath from lane to Quantock Farm and Quantock Combe through wooded area. Steady climb up through Seven Wells Wood to Lunch at Dead Woman's Ditch. Continued after short break over Black Hill to wood on Lady's Edge. Another steady climb up valley to crossroads at Bicknoller Post. Excellent views across to Minehead and North Devon. Good track to Beacon Hill Barrow with more excellent views again over Minehead and the Severn Estuary to South Wales. Amazed to see so much of South Wales. From the Gower Peninsular to Forest of Dean. The old nuclear power station of Hinckley Point very visible unfortunately. Undulating walk down Smith's Combe and across to Holford via Alfoxton Park Hotel. Deer just visible through trees in Hotel grounds. Interesting bridge in steep valley just before Holford. Welcome pint in 'The Plough' before our return journey up the M5 motorway. Very few stiles or gates. Explains why the Quantock Hills are so popular the bikers and bikes. Thanks again to Jack and Bill etc. for another excellent day's walking. www.streepmap.co.uk start 314835/135000, finish 315490/141055, via Beacon Hill 312435/141015 Hazards: Excellent views if the weather is favourable. Otherwise constantly check the map for your position. Few distinguishing points to check exact location. Hills generally steep and similar. Could be very time consuming and hard work if the wrong valley is chosen by mistake. | |||||
