Cricket Square in middle of green. Started walking down Green View Avenue at 7:10 pm. No signal to phone home. Circular embankment for unknown reasons just after railway bridge. Very tall grass in meadows around River Medway. No pillbox at '5', turn right arrow on tree by river pointing to stile across meadow. Right of way changed around house on Killick's Bank. Turn left at good fenced track. At '9' where good track turns left to Well Place continue ahead skirting Farm building over to left. After '11' turn right into Leicester Square courtyard. Disturbed approx 20 House Martins nesting under eaves of Tudor timbered cottages. At '12' take path diagonally to front of church and turn right along path to park. Views of Penshurst Place over tall hedges. Cricket match in progress, pavillion well used. Pillbox after '13' good playground for kids. Stiles moved between '14' & '16', also drizzle from'14' to '17' although a perfect evening forcast. No gate at '16', but turn right along avenue of trees when the reaching the highest point. Interesting hop oasts converted to houses on left of lane just before Leigh station. Returned to village green at 8:55 pm. Very quiet & peaceful walk over varied countryside. www.streetmap.co.uk Start/Finish 554940/146475, via 552715/143985 Hazards: Remember that farmers are fond of moving gates and stiles. Be aware that the countryside 'signposts' are continually changing. Removal of hedges is the greatest headache for ramblers. Be aware when counting fields as per the directions. From '19' take care on narrow bendy lane, walk on right hand side of road, especially under railway bridge. | |||||
