Description:
Started at Goathland after a long drive across the moors over narrow and steep lanes. From Goathland walked down the old bed of Mallyan Spout with good anticipation of a fine view between the water level in the rice was quite high. Valley steep sided in places. Walked along side beside the river and above the valley in the fields. A difficult scramble over boulders in the river to see the falls. To my disappointment only a small fraction of the water passing down the river was falling over the waterfall. The remainder was flowing past the falls along the valley. As I walked back to the car, I noticed that all the frees were marked with a red blob. I could only guess that the trees were due to be felled, but no obvious reason why. As I approached the discussed track of the railway again, I enjoyed watching an aerobic biplane practising tricks over the empty moorland. I continued back to the car passed a tractor to level out the bridleway by filling in the holes, only partial success. Passed station but no steam trains.
