Bell Ringing - Tour

Saturday 21st April 2007
21st April 2007 - Lillington Tower Outing to Buckinghamshire - Map Courtesy www.streetmap.co.uk
Buckinghamshire

Lillington St. Mary Magdalene Tower Outing

Newport Pagnell ....................................... 10:00 to 10:45am

Sts. Peter and Paul, 8 bells, 21-2-16 in Eb

1. Bell 2 - Rounds & Call Changes.
2. Tenor Bell - Rounds & Call Changes (On big box).
3. Bell 3 - Rounds and Rung Down.

Ground floor ring, very long ropes.
Church with stumpy tower (added in 16th century) is situated in the town centre of Newport Pagnell, close to the banks of the Great Ouse River & the High Street shops (B526). Very nice loud bells.

Olney ........................................................... 11:30 to 12:15pm

Sts. Peter and Paul, 8 bells, 24-3-14 in D

1. Bell 7 - Rounds & Call Changes.
2. Bell 6 - Rounds and Rung Down.

Second Floor Ring. Very long spiral staircase.
Tower with very tall, 185 feet, broach steeple situated at the southern end the village of Olney, near the banks of the Great Ouse River. Unusual windows on the four sides of the steeple. It is possible to see straight through the steeple to the countryside beyond. The oldest bell is dated 1522 and is inscribed 'God save the Queen'.

Lunch with Sylvia in The Bull Inn public house, Olney, on the High Street (A509), opposite the village square.

Clifton Reynes .......................................... 2:30 to 3:15pm

St. Mary the Virgin, 6 bells, 10-2-14 in A

1. Bell 2 - Rang down.
The ringer on the Tennor (who will be nameless, it happens to us all) broke the stay so the ringing had to be discontinued. Disappointment all round, but never mind another tower still to be rung before the end of the day. We had to search the village for the key holder, to explain the situation in detail.

Ground floor ring.
Church and tower completely castellated and situated at the end of the village, close to the Great Ouse River. Tower is thought to be Norman. Look for 'Bo' the medieval dog with his name on his collar. Look also for the brass plate in the floor showing a Reynes knight who fought at Agincourt.

Yardley Hastings ...................................... 3:45 to 4:15pm

St. Andrew's, 6 bells, 14 cwt in G.

1. Bell 2 - Plain course of Grandsire Doubles
2. Bell 5 - Plain hunt on six bells
3. Bell 5 - Touch of Plain Bob Doubles

First Floor Ring. Wooden steps up to very large and heavy trap door into ringing chamber. Great care required to ensure all ringers and guests were clear of the door before opening or closing.
The church is partly Norman and partly early English.

We all enjoyed a pleasant journey through the Buckinghamshire countryside, alongside the Great Ouse River.
Thanks to Roger Howes and Richard Taulbut for organising a great day out while ringing the Buckinghamshire village bells.

Weather : Warm, sunny and dry, little wind.

Ropes : Not damp or stiff. Generally in good condition.
